Appliances & Scrap Metal
NEVER place scrap metal in your curbside recycling bin or at any of the 24/7 Residential Drop-off Recycling locations!
Metal recycling is incredibly beneficial for the environment for several key reasons:
1. Reduces Energy Consumption
- Recycling aluminum uses about 95% less energy than creating new aluminum from bauxite ore.
- Recycling steel uses about 60% less energy than producing new steel from iron ore.
2. Conserves Natural Resources
The mining of metals (like iron, copper, and aluminum) depletes natural resources. By recycling metals, we reduce the need to mine new ores, which can help maintain biodiversity, prevent habitat destruction, and reduce pollution from mining activities.
3. Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Mining, smelting, and refining metals are energy-intensive processes that release large amounts of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. By recycling metals, we significantly reduce the emission of GHGs.
- Recycling one ton of steel saves about 1.5 tons of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere.
4. Reduces Waste in Landfills
Many metal products end up in landfills, occupying space and contributing to waste and leachate issues. Recycling helps reduce the volume of waste that needs to be disposed of in landfills, keeping metal out of waste streams, and making it possible to be used again rather than mining for raw materials.
5. Promotes a Circular Economy
Recycling supports a circular economy, where materials are reused, remanufactured, and recycled indefinitely, rather than following the traditional "take, make, dispose" model. This reduces the environmental footprint of industries and fosters sustainability by maximizing the lifespan of materials.
